This is an 11"x14" Giclee paper print from the original Sadie Allen acrylic, "O to Fly".
Since childhood I've always liked the idea of flying horses. Something about a huge, heavy, yet graceful animal being able to soar through colorful clouds above verdant lands is exciting and intriguing to me. Plus I've always wished I could fly. When I was little I would debate with myself: if I had the option of being able to turn invisible or fly, which would I pick? My choice changed daily.
But what if you did suddenly sprout wings? This image is not about greek mythology. For me, it is more the idea of what it feels like to be liberated. That is the amazing thing about gifts like salvation and freedom. Not only does one escape a dark place, but they get to experience something wonderful that they couldn't before. They get to BE something great that they weren't before. Gravity (representing: addictions, self-doubt, fear and other negative things) no longer pins the free person to the ground! Wings are to be used for good, as are talents. Once you get them don't settle for fluttering. Soar! See how high you can fly!
Of course, it doesn't have to be metaphorical or inspirational. It can also just be a great picture with flying horses and pretty colors that makes you happy inside.
I used different types of birds to influence the wings and the character of the horses. The silver horse is based off an owl and playfully pouncing in the air. The little blond horse is based off tumbler pidgeons, which deliblerately "tumble" and spin when they fly. This horse is not in distress, it is merely enjoying the air. The brown horse is more of a hang glide racer type personality, zipping through the air seeing how fast it can go. The black one is meant to be more graceful and the pinto (way off in the distance) just wants to know how high it can go and how much it can see.
